Read each clue carefully. Complete each checkpoint accurately based on the description.  You must complete 9 out of the 10 checkpoints.  Checkpoint #10 is mandatory (cannot be your skip), and will need to be completed last, otherwise checkpoints can be completed in any order throughout the race.

Each checkpoint has a set of validation points below the clue that we will confirm for every submission.  Submit your completed clues to our Race Headquarters throughout the race via your Team Bonfyre and we will notify you quickly of the status using one of these simple responses:

VERIFIED = everything is completed correctly

CODE 1 = you are not at the correct location

CODE 2 = all of the requirements were not met

CODE 3 = all team members were not visible

Our HQ will review your submission almost instantly.  You should see your response very quickly but you do not need to wait around for it, especially if you are confident that you completed the checkpoint correctly. Teams need to stay together throughout the race from one checkpoint to another and each team member (and their body markings when possible) should be visible in every submission unless otherwise noted.

If you have a race-related question during the race you can submit it through your Team Bonfyre.  We will respond quickly and provide you with the information you need as long as it doesn't impact your ability to solve the clue.

We have carefully scouted and vetted every checkpoint but cities are a constantly changing beast so if a checkpoint is inaccessible or you're not able to complete the requirements for any reason let us know right away and we will adjust the requirements if needed and verify accordingly.

GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!

Checkpoint #1

There aren't too many national attractions here in the city that are alive, but this one draws tons of visitors each year, especially in about 89 days from now.  It stands in the same area as a monument that was intended to be the milestone from which all road distances in the US are measured from.  It's used in an annual tradition that initially began back in 1923 as a way to encourage more people to use electricity (which makes sense because even this year it will likely use 60,000 lights). Once you've found this live attraction take a video of your entire team and at least 2 strangers all singing part of any song from this attraction's most popular time of year, while the attraction is clearly visible behind you.

- 1 video, all team members clearly visible

- Team is at the specified live attraction

- Team members and at least 2 strangers are singing part of any song commonly sung during this attraction's most popular time of year

Checkpoint #2

In the 1800's you likely would have seen historic figures ice skating along the canal at this location. Locals can once again ice skate here, ever since this park opened in November of 2012.  This 3-block space also consists of fountains, electric car charging stations, and a tavern.  Once you get there, find the long stretch of curved benches shown in the image below.  To complete this challenge take a video of your team traversing up and over the entire stretch of the benches from one end to another within one 9-second video (the maximum length that can be uploaded to Bonfyre). Please be respectful of anyone sitting on the bench by alerting them of what you'll be doing, and avoiding bumping into them while moving across it.

- 1 video, all team members clearly visible if possible

- Team is at specified park bench

- Team attempts to traverse up and over the entire stretch of the specified bench within one 9-second video

Checkpoint #3

Using the District's Metro system efficiently today will likely give you a huge advantage. With it being the 2nd busiest system in the country, consisting of 6 lines, 91 stations, and 117 miles of route, completing this checkpoint will require deciphering this elaborate system.  Take a picture of your entire team and any Metro pole (as seen in the image below) that has 4 or more different colored lines around the top of the pole.  The image below shows a pole with 3 different colors, as an example, but you'll need to find any of the multiple poles around the city that have 4 or more colors.

- 1 picture, all team members clearly visible

- Specified Metro sign/pole is clearly visible

- The Metro sign/pole has 4 or more different colored lines around the top of the pole and can be clearly seen by Race HQ

Checkpoint #4

There have been lots of secretive things that have happened here in the District, but the secretive (or not so secretive) events that took place at this location in the early 1970's had a huge impact on our nation's history.  To figure out this secret location you'll need to use what's likely already in your hand to decipher this code:

If the name of this race were 975673 then the name of this location would be 928374283

Get to this complex and take a picture of your entire team all making the "shhhh" pose (as if you're covering up a national secret), with any official signage identifying this location visible behind you.

- 1 picture, all team members clearly visible

- Team is at the specified building complex and some form of official signage identifying the location is clearly visible and legible in the background

Checkpoint #5

The aircraft portrayed in the movie clip below (click play to watch it) was built in 1935 by a genius, but bizarre, billionaire.  It's sleek design helped it break all kinds of speed records at the time, including the shortest flight across the US.  Shortly after breaking the speed record on it's maiden flight the plane ran out of fuel and crashed into a beet field.  Upon exiting the downed aircraft the billionaire pilot's only comment was "We can fix her, she'll go faster".  Find this original plane here in the city and take a picture of your entire team with this beautiful aircraft clearly visible behind you.

- 1 picture, all team members clearly visible

- The original specified aircraft is clearly visible in the background

Checkpoint #6

Driving in the District can be a challenge.  When the gas tank gets low it's even more of a challenge to find a place to fill up in the city.  Now just imagine how tough it would be to find a station with gas that has a certain price, because that's what you need to do!  Find any gas station sign (listing the price of the gas at that station) that has an even number in the gas price, and take a picture of your team with that sign.  For example, if the price is listed as $3.65, it would be acceptable because the 6 in the price is an even number, but $3.75 would not be accepted.  Any grade or type of gas (unleaded, premium, diesel, etc) is able to be used. The price should be listed on one of the large display signs outside of the station or on one of the pumps if the station doesn't have a display sign.

- 1 picture, all team members clearly visible

- Large sign outside of a gas station displaying that location's gas prices is visible

- Any of the listed 3-digit gas prices include an even number, and are clearly legible

Checkpoint #7

This memorial, which opened to the public in April of 2004, honors the 16 million armed forces who served during this war, and the more than 400,000 who died.  The memorial features (among many other great tributes) large granite columns for each of the states that were a part of the US at the time.  Once there find the column of the only state whose capital city does not share any letters with it's state's name.  For example, Virginia would not be the state since the capital of Richmond contains the letter "R" (as well as an "I" and "N") and so does the word "Virginia".  Once you've figured it out, take a picture of your team with that state's column clearly visible in the background.

To avoid teams from just submitting numerous pictures of states we are limiting the submissions to 3 attempts.  If you can't figure it out after 3 attempts this checkpoint will be blocked for your team and will need to become your skip.

- 1 picture, all team members clearly visible

- Team is at specified war memorial

- The large granite column of the state whose capital city does not share any letters with it's state's name is clearly visible and legible in the background

Checkpoint #8

The blue vessels seen in the image below are a popular way to see the 107 acre area designed to release millions of gallons of water captured at high tide twice a day.  These vessels are all over the specified area, especially during the colorful Spring festival.  Finding them on a nice day like today shouldn't be tough, but completing the challenge will take some effort, and maybe a loud voice.  Take a picture of your team members giving a high-five to anyone operating one of these vessels, while the vessel is in water.  You are able to complete this challenge anywhere along the shoreline if you can convince a boat to come to you, but technically because of a policy where boats are asked to not get too close to the shore you can also complete this challenge on a floating dock.

- 1 picture, all team members clearly visible

- Team is located at the specified area

- Team members are giving a high five to an operator or passenger in one of the specified blue vessels and the vessel is in the water

Checkpoint #9

In order to be successful in politics here in DC you need to find a balance and get everyone to work together. This checkpoint can be completed anywhere around the city. Take a picture of your entire team while one soda can per team member (of any brand) is perfectly balanced at an angle as shown in the picture below.  You must have one soda can visible for each racer on your team and all of them must be balanced at an angle, and unsupported (not being held or leaning against anything).

- 1 picture, all team members clearly visible

- Soda cans are balanced at an angle (similar to the image below), and are not being held or leaning against something

- Team must complete the challenge using 1 soda can for each racer on your team and all of them must be balanced in the picture at the same time

Checkpoint #10

(MANDATORY, CANNOT BE YOUR SKIP)

(MUST BE COMPLETED LAST BY YOUR TEAM)

After you have completed 8 total checkpoints and had them verified by our Race HQ, then this checkpoint will be the final one you complete. The FINISH LINE for the entire race!  The establishment whose logo is shown below, and whose address is on G Street NW, is where you'll need to get to.

Once your team completes your 8th total checkpoint successfully our Race HQ will send you a quick and brief instruction on what your team needs to do at this location.  Once you complete the objective or upload the required submission at this location you will be finished the race and you will instantly receive your finish place and time!  Then you can celebrate with your team, the other fun racers, and recover from your adventure at this after race venue (see details below)!

- All team members present at the Finish

- Team completes the requirement sent by Race HQ
