Read each clue carefully. Complete each checkpoint accurately based on the description.  

You must complete 9 out of the 10 checkpoints.  Checkpoint #10 is mandatory (cannot be your skip), and will need to be completed last, otherwise checkpoints can be completed in any order throughout the race.

Our HQ will review your submission almost instantly.  You should see your response very quickly but you do not need to wait around for it, especially if you are confident that you completed the checkpoint correctly.

Teams need to stay together throughout the race from one checkpoint to another and each team member (and their body markings when possible) should be visible in every submission unless otherwise noted.

If you have a race-related question during the race you can submit it through your Team Bonfyre.  We will respond quickly and provide you with the information you need as long as it doesn't impact your ability to solve the clue.

We have carefully scouted and vetted every checkpoint but cities are a constantly changing beast so if a checkpoint is inaccessible or you're not able to complete the requirements for any reason let us know right away and we will adjust the requirements if needed and verify accordingly.

Checkpoint #1

Get your team to the Memorial Park named for a former Governor who served the shortest term of any AZ governor (just 5 months).  This park is located just east of a large half sphere made of element 29.  Somewhere within the park are 10 large standing stones etched with the words of the document that FDR declared our country should honor on December 15th, 1941 (it's 150th anniversary).  Once you're at the stones, find the word "peace", which is etched into one of them, and take a picture of your entire team making a peace sign while the word "peace" is clearly visible and legible on the stone behind you.  Be aware that one of the stones has the word "peaceably" etched on it, but that will not count.  You need to find the exact word "peace".

Checkpoint #2

The colorful mural shown below is located near the center of Phoenix's popular artsy Row, and just south of a street that shares it's name with a lazy orange tabby who has a passion for lasagna.  You know you're close if you're in the same block as the number of men Gerard Butler leads into battle in a 2006 fantasy war film. Once you've found the mural, take a picture of all the racers on your team as they each place one hand on a black square, one hand on a green square, and one foot on a pink or yellow colored square.  Multiple racers can be touching the same squares but each racer should be touching 3 separate limbs to 3 separate colored squares.  Take your time, read the directions carefully, and complete it successfully in one try so you don't lose time.  Don't worry too much about the shade of the specified color. For example, if it asks you to place a foot in a pink or yellow square, you'll be verified as long as that square is in the pink or yellow family. 

Because a selfie may be tough to show everything needed for verification, and because this mural is in an area that might not have a lot of people walking by, feel free to submit two separate pictures, with half your team completing the challenge successfully in each submission so that someone on your team can take the picture.

Checkpoint #3

Consistently ranked the sunniest city in the country, the sun's rays have a clear path to Phoenix for more than 85% of the time throughout the year. This makes it a great location for using panels to convert that sunshine into energy.  Take a picture of your entire team with any solar panels around the city.  The panels need to be actual solar panels used to convert sunshine into energy and not a toy or image of them, etc.  The picture also needs to show enough of the panels so that HQ can verify what they are.  Seeing the actual dark colored panels where the sun hits them will be the fastest way to get them verified but is not required if we can tell they are solar panels from another angle.

Checkpoint #4

Known historically as Constable Ice & Fuel, this building is located in the historic original townsite of the city of Phoenix. It began operations in 1920 manufacturing 300 pound ice blocks for use in the food industry, so that produce could be kept cold as it was shipped across the country. To honor this building's cold role in history, get to this location and complete the Ice Block Challenge.  Take a video of your entire team as each racer balances an ice cube on their forehead, unsupported, for a full 9 seconds while this historic building is clearly visible and identifiable in the background.  If anyone's ice cube falls to the ground within those 9 seconds it will not be verified.  So if that happens don't submit the video and simply attempt the challenge again until you complete it successfully.  In desert heat like today, the toughest challenge may be just finding ice and keeping it cold until you can get to this location.  

Be aware that the longest length video you can upload to the Bonfyre app is 9 seconds, so start your video as all racers are placing an ice cube on their respective foreheads and then keeping it balanced without touching it for the remaining length of the video. Be sure the ice cubes are large enough by the time you complete the challenge so that HQ can verify they're actually ice cubes.

Checkpoint #5

(this location closes at 3pm so if you arrive after that time let HQ know and we'll adjust the requirements)

In March of 1963 a man was arrested for a crime here in Phoenix that forever changed how police officers operate not only here but around the world.  Get your team to the downtown museum honoring the men and women who serve in "blue" and locate the exhibit about this man and his famous case.  You'll know you're at the correct exhibit when you see the life-size cutout of the suspect.  Once you're at the exhibit, take a video of any ONE of your teammates while they close their eyes and recite the rights shown below (which were developed because of this case) while the specified exhibit is clearly visible in the background:

You have the right to remain silent.

Anything you say or do can and will be used against you in a court of law.

You have the right to an attorney.

If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to you.

Do you understand these rights?

Be sure to have your whole team in front of the exhibit while just ONE member closes their eyes and recites all of these rights by memory within one continuous video.  Be aware that the maximum length video you can submit to Bonfyre is only 9 seconds so whomever recites it will need to do it quickly and efficiently (the real test of this challenge).  The rest of the team cannot prompt the racer if they forget part of it and the racer must not have any earphones in their ear while they recite it.  Watch your video before submitting it and if your racer didn't recite all of the rights within one video have them attempt it again before submitting.

- ONE team member has their eyes closed and recites all of the rights (as written above) within one 9-second video.

Checkpoint #6

Get your team to any YMCA in the area and take a video of your entire team AND AT LEAST TWO STRANGERS all singing and dancing to the Village People's famous song about this great organization, while the building is clearly visible in the background.  Make sure to capture enough of the building or the sign that identifies it as a YMCA so that HQ can verify it quickly.  If you need a little background music for your performance you can click on the PLAY button below.

Checkpoint #7

This museum, found inside a large aluminum barn/garage, is located almost directly above a major Interstate.  The "system" that this museum helps preserve and educate the public about once thrived in this city.  The system made use of 18 cars that traveled over 15 million miles on the city streets before eventually being replaced by more modern methods (some of which you'll likely use today).  Get your team to this museum and take a picture with Number 116, which was one of the last three of these to operate in the city.  Number 116 does not refer to the address, but rather something whose motto was "ride a mile, and smile a while".

Checkpoint #8

Reportedly this Englishman was such an embarrassment to his family that he was exiled to the States. Around 1870 he built a two room adobe home which still remains the oldest home in Phoenix.  It is said that he named Phoenix (as well as Tempe), after thinking the city would rise from the ancient Indian canals like the mythological bird that rose from its ashes.  This "embarrassment" in England but important figure here in Phoenix is buried in a desolate memorial park cemetery west of downtown.  Get to this location and take a picture of your entire team while his grave is clearly visible and identifiable in the background.   

Be aware that this cemetery's hours vary depending on the availability of association volunteers.  Volunteers are scheduled to be on site throughout the afternoon (at least until 2pm and likely even later) but if you get to the main gate closest to the specified grave and it is locked for some reason just let HQ know and we will adjust the requirements accordingly.

Checkpoint #9

With over 50 stations and 500 bikes in the area, Grid Bikeshare is helping to make Phoenix a more bike friendly city.  With all those bright green bikes around the city this challenge may come down to timing and luck.  Take a picture of your entire team while any green GRID Bikeshare bike is being ridden by a stranger in the background.  The bike must be the green GRID Bikeshare kind, and the bike must be actively getting ridden by a stranger in the background (not just someone standing with your team on one they rented or sitting on one in a docking station).  Capturing a picture of your whole team and the Bikeshare rider as they're riding by in the background will be the real test of this challenge!

- the bike is actively being ridden by a stranger in the background, and not just standing with your team or sitting on one in a docking station  


Checkpoint #10  

(MANDATORY, CANNOT BE YOUR SKIP)

(MUST BE COMPLETED LAST BY YOUR TEAM)

After you have completed 8 total checkpoints and had them verified by our Race HQ, then this checkpoint will be the final one you complete. The FINISH LINE for the entire race!  

The establishment you need to get to, which is shown below, has an address along East Jefferson Street.       

Once your team completes your 8th total checkpoint successfully, start heading towards this location and our Race HQ will send you a quick and brief instruction on what your team needs to do once you get there.  Once you complete the objective or upload the required submission at this location you will be finished the race and you will instantly receive your finish place and time!  Then if you'd like, you can relax with your team, some other fun racers, and recover from your adventure at this after race venue!
